Yarra Valley

The Yarra River

Yarra Valley as an area of low rolling hills and valleys and is regarded as the heart of Victoria's wine growing industry. Located only one hours drive east of Melbourne, the Yarra Valley is easily accessible and has all the amenities including, accommodation (from family friendly bed & breakfasts to five star retreats), recreation facilities and restaurants.

If you appreciate a fine wine then you have the opportunity to sample wines from well over 75 Wineries (some open to the public by appointment only), including, Yering Station, Domaine Chandon, De Bortoli, Billanook Estate, Rochford Wines and many more. The Wineries offer everything from tastings, cellar door, wine appreciation classes and fine food restaurants.

Within the Yarra Valley at Healsville is the world renowned Healsville Sanctuary animal reserve where you can see, platypuses, wombats, kangaroos and other native Australian animals in their natural environment. Driving west along Maroondah Highway [B360] from Healsville and turning right at the historic home of Dame Nellie Melba and then travelling north along Melba Highway [B300] through green valleys dotted with wineries, you'll pass close to Yarra Valley Racecourse home to the Yarra Valley Market. If you enjoy local produce markets then you can visit the Yarra Valley Farmers' Market held regularly at Yering Station.

The region is particularly suited for bike riders and it is the only way to truly appreciate the countryside, local trails, Yarra River, Stoney Reserve's swing bridge (at Warburton), country pubs and local architecture.

At different times throughout the year the region comes alive with local festivals and events, including, the Shortest Lunch (June), Steadfast (October), the Summer Rochford Concert Series, the Melba Festival (October), Kellybrook Cider Festival (April) and the Graze the Valley Weekend (June). Regularly held events include craft markets, weekend farmers' markets, produce markets, community markets and much more.

If you'd like to truly take it easy and get to see all there is on offer, then an organised tours may be more to your liking.
