The South Melbourne
Market, on the corners of Cecil and Coventry Streets, is a popular
produce and general merchandise market situated barely a couple
of kilometres from the CBD. There are more than 200 stalls and you
can buy most things found at markets. There are also some very popular
restaurants and cafes directly opposite and in nearby streets. A
No.96 light rail stop is near the markets. (Catch the No 96 from
Bourke Street in the city.)
Close to the
markets, at 260 Park Street, is the Victorian Tapestry Workshop,
where skilled weavers and artists work together to create large-scale
tapestries. Some items are available for sale. There is a small
entrance fee. The workshop is open from 10 am to 4pm on weekdays
with tours at 2pm on Wednesdays and 11am on Thursdays.
The South Melbourne
Market is open on Wednesdays from 8am until 4pm, on Fridays from
8am until 5pm and on weekends from 8am until 4pm.
