La
Trobe Cottage is situated in the King's Domain, an area of parklands
and gardens near the southern entrance to the Royal Botanic
Gardens.
The prefabricated cottage was brought to Australia
from England in 1839 to house the city's first governor, Charles
Joseph La Trobe. Restored by the National Trust and it contains some original furnishings.
Currently it is open for booked tour groups. Tours can be generally organised with Government House on +61 3 9656 9800. The Cottage is also open some Sunday afternoons, check the National Trust website for details.
To get there,
catch a No.8 tram heading south in Swanston Street and get off at
stop 21 or 22.
